The Future is 4K: Bringing Home Theater to Life

What is 4K, and how does it work? You may have heard the term 4K when exploring home theatre options, screen displays and TV formats. But what is 4K and how does it work?
According to CNET, “4K is an up-and-coming video technology that promises a better quality picture when you're watching movies or TV shows.”
But before we get into the ins and outs of 4K, let’s review a few key definitions:
- Display: The surface screen of your TV, movie screen, etc.
- Pixels: Dots that make up on-screen images. The more dots, the sharper the images appear.
- Resolution: How many pixels are in a display.
The term ‘4K’ refers to the resolution of an electronic display. Specifically, it refers to the fact that there are roughly 4,000 pixels on the horizontal side of the display, which gives 4K four times as high a resolution as 1080p (i.e. what we call traditional ‘Full HD’ or ‘Full High Definition’ screens).
And that’s why 4K is often called “Ultra HD” or “UHD.”
Why should I explore 4K?
In addition to providing a significantly higher resolution, and thus a clearer picture, 4K stands out from traditional HD in a number of other ways:
1. 1080p is good, but 4K is great.
According to one hi-fi reviewer:
“There are still some solid 1080p TVs out there, and they will look good for years to come. But if you want a great TV capable of taking advantage of all the latest video content, you’re going to need a 4K UHD TV or projector.”
2. 4K TVs and Projectors have all the best technology.
Manufacturers are putting all their efforts into finessing 4K technology — not traditional 1080p, or HD, technology. As Digital Trends asserts, manufacturers want to phase out 1080p TVs, and they are choosing to put their best tech into 4K.

3. 4K brings the magic of the movies into your home.
By now, we know 4K TVs and Projectors offer higher resolution images. But along with the higher resolution often comes larger size. And that means big impact.

“On a 1080p screen, you can't see all the detail. From the average sofa distance of nine feet, your eye just can't resolve it. But on a larger 4K screen, you've got yourself a party. You can see individual strands of hair, every pore and whisker, every blade of grass and every grain of sand.”
